The revitalisation of the heritage listed Goods Shed an historic Claremont landmark promises to bring a new level of vibrancy and energy to the surrounding neighbourhood.
LandCorp Chief Executive, Frank Marra said the disused former rail goods storage shed, will in coming months be transformed into a lively cultural facility by successful proponent FORM.
"FORM's proposal of using the facility as a location for community engagement and cultural interaction would benefit the wider Claremont community while reflecting LandCorp's values in urban regeneration," Mr Marra said.
"They will manage the heritage-listed building as a creative hub featuring a gallery, events space and a curated program of artist residencies, while also celebrating the building's historical importance."
"It will also feature a barista and a coffee window."
Mr Marra said the activation of the Goods Shed is a key feature of LandCorp's Claremont on the Park development which is realising the potential of underutilised land and turning it into a thriving residential community.
"A landscaped forecourt will also provide an attractive new public space in front of the heritage building where people can sit and relax."
Mr Marra praised the Town of Claremont for its vision in the redevelopment process saying it was an exciting time for the whole community.
FORM's Executive Director Lynda Dorrington said that the organisation was looking forward to activating a special building in an established suburb, and exploring how it could interact culturally and creatively with the local neighbourhood.
"This is an opportunity to experience a new Claremont. FORM is excited to work with LandCorp to reimagine the Goods Shed, not only as a sophisticated cultural centre, but also as a welcoming and dynamic public space for the community."
The significant restorative works required on the Goods Shed will be undertaken in consultation with the Town of Claremont and the State Heritage Office and will be subject to approvals.
It is envisioned the Goods Shed's new facilities, located on Shenton Road opposite the Claremont Train Station, will be open to the public in early 2016.
