Subi East - Planning

A place for living, learning and leisure

About the project

We’re planning ahead for a vibrant future for one of Perth’s most-loved suburbs.

The award-winning Subi Centro project has been just the beginning for Subiaco. At the centre of the Subi East plan is a new Inner City College. This will be built on Kitchener Park, catering for high school enrolments from 2020.

We're working with the local community and the City of Subiaco to plan a new future for the broader Subi East project area. This 35.6 hectare project area includes:

A new way of living in Subi Eas

Our Subi East renewal project will create new places to live, learn, work and play for thousands of people.

New opportunities for a contemporary education

With Subiaco at the heart of Perth’s expanding inner and western suburbs, the new Inner City College will take the enrolment pressures off other high schools in the area.

When it’s complete, the new school will feature world-class facilities and equipment, with a Gifted and Talented Selective Academic Program on offer.

The school will open for 250 Year 7 students in 2020 and grow to accommodate 1600 Year 7 to 12 students by 2025.

The Departments of Education and Finance (Building Management and Works) will take control of the site to begin construction of the first stage of the school in mid 2018.

Celebrating sport and recreation

With Australian Football League (AFL) now at the new 60,000 seat, multi-purpose Perth Stadium in Burswood, we’re working on a new plan for Subiaco Oval.

The heritage-listed gates will be preserved, with a smaller oval planned for school and community groups to use and enjoy.

Mueller Park will be kept as a public park and there are no plans to redevelop this area.

Master planning still to come will explore how the surrounding areas can be redeveloped for a range of leisure, education and residential community uses in the future.

A connected community

Subiaco’s strong and proud history is firmly embedded in the local community.

Thousands of Perth families have a strong connection with Subiaco, from early settlement, a love of football, or even the care and comfort provided by Princess Margaret Hospital for more than 100 years.

The Subi East redevelopment will celebrate and reimagine the past, sharing the stories and making way for an exciting future that builds on the suburb’s character and sense of place.

“Noongar history, as well as more recent social history, particularly the Princess Margaret Hospital and Subiaco Oval sites, will be retold in ways that honour the place, the people and the strong community connections they hold."

A convenient and sustainable neighbourhood

As part of our planning to make Subi East a truly sustainable community, we’ll focus on a range of transport options to help reduce the reliance on cars. We’ll look for ways to make the most of West Leederville Train Station and how to integrate the station into the community.

“Our vision to create a better connected inner city village will work to reduce car reliance and promote active and public transport options.”

The project will build on the work already complete at nearby Subi Centro. The existing green spine will extend through to Subi East, providing a continuous stretch of public space to allow for more cycling, walking and outdoor recreation.
