Princess Margaret Hospital impacted so many Western Australian lives over its 109-year history. While that vital work and support continues at the new Perth Children’s Hospital, the legacy of PMH is very much a part of the fabric of our state and our community. It holds a special place in the hearts of us all – and reflecting and respecting that legacy for generations to come is top of mind as we work to deliver the new Subi East inner-city village.
This is an opportunity for anyone around the world to say a final farewell to the hospital before demolition is completed as part of the Subi East project.
You are invited to share your personal photos, memories and experiences of Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital via a unique digital time capsule. Enter your personal story below to have it preserved in time, for Western Australians to uncover 109 years from now - the same length of time that PMH was in service. Submissions will remain open for the duration of the demolition process, expected to be complete mid 2022.
Once submitted, the stories and reflections will remain confidential until the time capsule is opened. Technology would have changed by then, but just as we have currently, specialist services will exist to retrieve the information for our future generations.

In the late 1890s, a little girl placed three pennies into a collection box in Charles Moore’s store in Perth’s central business district. When asked what she would like them to be used for, she replied that she would like to help sick children. This kickstarted the fundraising efforts by the Perth community to build a children’s hospital, which opened in 1909.

109 years after it first began caring for Western Australian children and families, Princess Margaret Hospital closed its doors to patients for the final time in June 2018. It now begins its next chapter as the location for a vibrant inner-city village. Planned and designed for multigenerational living, the Subi East Redevelopment will once again breathe life into the area – and once again the sounds of children, their parents and even grandparents will reverberate around town squares, green public open space and meeting places.
