Anketell SIA


The Anketell Port is intended for the export of iron ore (magnetite and hematite) from Pilbara mines with an ultimate throughput of 350 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa).

The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI) is the lead agency for the Anketell Project and DevelopmentWA is planning the development of the Anketell SIA. The port is being planned by the Pilbara Port Authority

The Anketell SIA is ideally located adjacent to major transport, infrastructure, residential workforces and town site amenities.

The process for land allocation in the SIA is set out in the Proponent Land Allocation Flowchart Proponents will be required to submit a Project Proposal to JTSI and DevelopmentWA.

1. Location         

 

The Anketell SIA is located 30km east of Karratha, 10km west of Wickham and 9km northwest of Roebourne in Western Australia.

Karratha is located approximately 1,400km north of Perth. 

There are daily flights from Perth Airport to Karratha Airport (approximately 2 hours flight time).

2. Land Tenure    

The total Anketell Project area including the port, industrial areas, multi-user infrastructure corridors and buffers is 6,744ha.

The Anketell SIA is 1,250ha, including 1,000ha for heavy or strategic industrial use and 175ha for general industrial use.

The heavy industrial and general industrial areas are owned and managed by DevelopmentWA. Interested parties will be required to submit a Proponent Project Proposal for approval by JTSI prior to negotiating an Option to Lease with DevelopmentWA.

3. Planning        

The Anketell SIA is located within the City of Karratha

The Anketell SIA itself is administrated by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage pursuant to the Anketell Strategic Industrial Area Improvement Scheme.

The Scheme Text, Scheme Map and Guide Plan set out the guiding principles for development in the Anketell SIA.

4. Sustainability     

Industries are encouraged to co-locate within the Anketell SIA to create synergies such as the re-use of products or by-products and the efficient use of land.

5. Environment  

The Environmental Assessment Report identifies the key environmental characteristics of the Anketell SIA and defines the potential environmental impacts and proposed mitigation measures required for future developments.

A Bushfire Management Plan has been created identifying areas of risk and outlining mitigation strategies.

A Water Management Strategy has also been completed to determine the extent, depth and velocity of fresh water flooding and inundation during large storms and cyclonic events. For ease of download the document has been divided into Part 1 and Part 2.

6. Services        

Private gas and electricity infrastructure are in close proximity to the Anketell SIA. Proponents will need to investigate servicing options depending on their requirements.

An Engineering Services and Infrastructure Plan Report has been prepared to support the Improvement Scheme Report and identify key areas of consideration.

7. Native Title        

The State and Ngarluma People have finalised an Indigenous Land Use Agreement for the future use of the Anketell SIA.

8. Aboriginal Heritage        

Aboriginal heritage sites may occur across the Anketell SIA. The Anketell Indigenous Land Use Agreement prescribes a process for considering Aboriginal heritage issues to avoid or minimise adverse impacts on Aboriginal heritage.

9. European Heritage        

There are no known European heritage sites in the Anketell SIA.
