Originally established in 1968 by a subsidiary of BHP to support the Mt Whaleback mine, Newman has become a bustling town of 6,000 and is set to more than double to 15,000 by 2035 due to the Western Australian State Government’s Pilbara Cities initiative and strong demand for iron ore exports.

The final stage of the State Government’s $40million revitalisation of Newman's town centre was recently revealed with plans for a new vibrant town square announced by Regional Development and Lands Minister Terry Redman.
Designs revealed for the new town square compliment revitalisation works completed to date and its envisioned the square will become the heart of Newman's new town centre.
Recent works in the town have seen the development of a new east/west entry, realignment of roads, upgraded power and wastewater services, landscaping, new car parks created and an improved pedestrian and bike network.
