Florence Hummerston Kiosk
Step into history at the Florence Hummerston Kiosk, a Perth landmark reborn at Elizabeth Quay.
Originally built in 1928 and relocated to its new home at the island in 2012, this iconic kiosk has had many lives — from restaurants and nightclubs to day care centres. Now, it’s a part of the vibrant Elizabeth Quay, housing The Island restaurant, where history meets great food.
Renamed in 1985 to honour Florence Hummerston, a pioneering community worker, the kiosk celebrates her legacy as Perth’s first female councillor and a champion for women’s rights. Florence’s notable achievements include:
- Vice-president of the Women’s Service Guilds of Western Australia (1937-40)
- Establishing the Women’s Australian National Service during World War II
- Founding Wanslea Hostel for children of sick mothers and running it for 25 years
- Launching the League of Home Help for Sick & Aged and Meals on Wheels in the 1950s
Today, the Florence Hummerston Kiosk stands as a testament to her tireless efforts and an integral part of the vibrant life at Elizabeth Quay.
