About
Within Without is a powerful statement artwork by Stuart Green and Noongar artist Sandra Hill, symbolising energy, endurance and a shared Western Australian history on Whadjuk Noongar Country.
The two 14-foot pieces reflect the site’s deep history—once a gathering place for Aboriginal people and later a marker of European arrival—while expressing hope for a united future. Their textured surfaces evoke timber, representing the lived experiences of both Indigenous and colonial communities.
Interwoven black and white elements form strong, balanced structures, with a glowing green light at the core—honouring the Proclamation Tree and symbolising renewal and growth.
About the site
The site of One The Esplanade sits on the Swan River (Derbal Yerrigan) foreshore, originally home to the Whadjuk Noongar people. With colonisation, it became the site where Western Australia’s self-government was proclaimed on October 21, 1890.
For settlers, Proclamation Day marked a new era of governance, but for Aboriginal people, whose land was never ceded, it carried a very different meaning.
