Yagan Square - Waterline

Artist: Jon Tarry
Materials: Carved stone

Water flows through Yagan Square as both a physical and symbolic thread, connecting the past and present. Designed by WA artist Jon Tarry in collaboration with ASPECT Studios, the Waterline is a sculptural water feature inspired by the natural waterways that once defined this landscape.

Water cascades through Yagan Square—past the amphitheatre, gardens and terraces—before reaching William Street Mall. The sculptural elements represent local animals such as black swans swamphens and gilgies, inviting visitors to engage with the site’s rich history.

Approaching the project as a sculptor, Jon Tarry used digital and traditional techniques to shape the ground as if carved by water over time. Through erosion-like grooves and scalloped stone surfaces, his design captures the natural process of water shaping the landscape

This integrated water experience is designed to cool, connect and activate Yagan Square through sensory movement, sound and texture—inviting visitors to engage with water as both a cultural and environmental storyteller.

“It’s a water story of many running through the site, offering a life revealed through experiences.” – Jon Tarry
