The Subi East project will see the rejuvenation of 35ha of land to create a vibrant new north-eastern gateway to Subiaco – one that respects and celebrates the rich heritage of the area, while realising the importance of its prominent location on the doorstep of the Perth CBD.The construction of the Perth Children’s Hospital and Optus Stadium have created an exciting opportunity to redevelop the Subiaco Oval and former Princess Margaret Hospital sites as part of this transformation. Subi East ultimately will be a vibrant, well-connected city village with great places to live, learn, work and play. Subi East has been developed through consultation with the community and will deliver:
- Diverse housing across the precinct, catering for families, aged care and affordable options
- Bob Hawke College, Perth’s new inner-city high school and key anchor of the Subi East development
- A ‘green spine’ and green links to unify the precinct and connect it to surrounding areas
- Quality recreation and community spaces including reinstatement of the Subiaco Oval playing surface, Mueller Park and smaller connecting areas, intended to be shared by locals and visitors
- New east-west and north-south linkages, creating stronger connections between Subiaco, the city and West Leederville
- A pedestrian-friendly precinct with people-centred intersections

Latest News: Subi East Master Plan Finalised
The Master Plan for the landmark $227 million Subi East project has been finalised.
The Master Plan provides a framework for the delivery of substantial economic and social opportunities that will breathe new life into the area through the creation of a vibrant inner-city village and gateway to Subiaco.
Raising the bar for design excellence and planning for multi-generational living, Subi East is expected to attract some $1 billion in private sector investment and generate some 2,700 jobs during construction.
The Master Plan has been built on the most comprehensive engagement process ever undertaken by DevelopmentWA. Working to fixed objectives for the project, particularly regarding infill targets to meet projected population growth, the aim has been to achieve a balance of the wide and diverse views of local residents, businesses, Whadjuk elders, industry representatives and the broader community.

Your opportunity to farewell Princess Margaret Hospital
Western Australians at home and all around the globe are being offered an opportunity to farewell Princess Margaret Hospital prior to demolition by submitting their memories and experiences into a unique digital time capsule.
The time capsule will be buried in a reflection area at the Subi East PMH neighbourhood and opened in 109 years.
The hospital closed its doors to patients for the final time in June 2018 after 109 years of caring for WA children and families. While that vital work and support continues at the new Perth Children’s Hospital, the legacy of PMH will continue on as we work to deliver the new Subi East inner-city village.
We have named the time capsule activity "A Penny For Your Thoughts" - a tip of the hat to the beginnings of the original fundraising campaign for a children’s hospital – which was started with three pennies donated by a little girl in the late 1890s. Those wishing to participate can embed their memory or upload any images onto a virtual penny, which will be stored on hard drive.

Former PMH site: Demolition application approved, contractor appointed.
Local WA company RJ Vincent has been awarded the contract to demolish and remediate the former Princess Margaret Hospital site in Subiaco.
With the demolition development application recently approved, early works will commence onsite in August and major structural demolition begins early 2021.
RJ Vincent, who undertook the successful demolition of the former Subiaco Oval grandstands and reinstatement of the oval, will work with stakeholders and the local community to plan the works program and create a timeline for demolition, which is expected to take 18 months.
The 35,000sqm site includes two heritage buildings, Godfrey House and the Old Outpatients Building, which will be protected and preserved during the works. Other buildings are being considered for retention as part of the Master Planning process.

Draft Master Plan: Public Comment Closed 10th September 2020
The most significant urban infill development of its type in modern Western Australia is forging ahead with the release of the draft Subi East Master Plan.
The Master Plan provides the blueprint for revitalising the area between Subiaco Oval and the former Princess Margaret Hospital site, including land along the rail line at West Leederville Station, into an iconic inner-city village and new gateway to Subiaco from the Perth CBD.
The release of the draft Subi East Master Plan underpins the substantial economic and social opportunities to be delivered through the transformational $227 million project.

Iconic Subiaco Oval opens gates to the community
For the first time in decades, the general public will be able to access Subiaco Oval, the original home of Western Australian football, following the demolition of the former grandstands and reinstatement of the historic playing surface.
Subiaco Oval, which saw its first game of football in 1908, was leased to the then Western Australian National Football League in 1937, becoming the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) in 1989. The last AFL game was played on the oval in 2017, prior to the opening of Perth's 60,000-seat Optus Stadium.

Subi East Master Plan: Community Survey - Phase 1
Community Engagement is an integral part of the Subi East Project and over the past six months we called on West Australians to submit stories, memories and reflections relating to the Subi East redevelopment area.This information was summarised and presented to the Subi East Master Plan Community Reference Group (CRG - see below for further information) to workshop key themes that will form the ‘Cultural Context’ of the precincts. In other words, we want the master plan to reflect the key cultural and historical elements of the project area.After reviewing, the CRG identified twelve potential cultural/heritage themes. We then invited the community to participate in a survey to finalise the Cultural Context.The survey closed 9am Monday 30 March 2020. The results of the survey have been presented back to the CRG, and shortly we will be announcing the 4 key themes which the community have identified as being the priority as the project moves forward.Determination of the Cultural Context was the first phase of the Master Plan Process. We have just commenced the second phase - design of the precinct.
The CRG has already participated in meetings and workshops for Phase 2, all conducted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated social distancing measures.

Stories of Subi brought to life with Augmented Reality.
Colourful stories of Subiaco’s history and heritage have been brought to life using augmented reality (AR) thanks to a unique partnership between DevelopmentWA and Perth Modern School.
The Stories of Subi project, launched 6th February 2020 at the Subi East Community Hub, allows community members and visitors to view the stories and hear the students talk about their work through a mobile phone app – providing a rich, interactive window into Subiaco’s past.

EOI issued for demolition of Princess Margaret Hospital
The next stage of the Subi East Redevelopment project is underway with the opening of Expressions Of Interest from qualified contractors for the demolition and remediation of the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) site.

Subi East Community Reference Group
Earlier this year we called for nominations from residents, community/special interest groups and business organisations to join the Subi East Community Reference Group (CRG).
The purpose of the group is to provide input to help shape the Master Planning process - the 'roadmap' for future development - working to the State-set project objectives
that will underpin the economic and social rejuvenation of the area.
We cast the net wide for volunteers representing different ages and interests from Subiaco and wider Perth communities to help us achieve a balance of quality outcomes. Drawn by ballot, supervised by an independent probity auditor, the succesful applicants were notified on 14 February, with the first meeting held 22 February, and subsequent meetings in March and April.
Demolition of Subiaco Grandstands
To deliver this exciting new precinct, the majority of ageing infrastructure at Subiaco Oval needed to be demolished and removed. The stadium demolition has been a major project, taking place across 13 carefully-planned zones. The above ground stadium structures have been dismantled gradually to minimise the disruption for surrounding residents and businesses.
The project has management plans in place to reduce the impact of dust, noise and vibrations and to preserve the area's heritage values.
Removal of the grandstands was through mechanical demolition, which involved excavators with hydraulic pulverisers that bite through steel and concrete.
Materials were broken into large chunks and transported by truck to recycling facilities. This was the safest method for demolition; it also ensured maximum recycling opportunities and minimum impact on the environment and community.
The majority of works were completed in time for the opening of Bob Hawke College in February 2020. Temporary landscaping is now underway, with a final landscape plan to be developed as part of the Master Planning process.

During February and March 2019 we sought feedback from the community on the Vision Concept for Subi East. The Vision Concept was an early representation of stakeholder and community feedback received throughout 2018. The community was then asked to provide further feedback on the Vision Concept. A total of 505 comments were received throughout the engagement period and more than 6,000 visitors viewed the site. The feedback received has been collated into a report which summarises the issues raised. A summary can be viewed here, or a full copy of the report can be viewed here.
Master planning for the future of the site has commenced. There will be a number of opportunities for the community to be involved in the master planning phase. For more information click here.
